I’ve heard some people say: “Inside every older person is a younger person wondering what happened.” Is that how you feel? When you look at your life today, is your reaction, “Wow, what happened?” If it is, chances are you didn’t really have an active role in it. Maybe you feel your life is a result of what happened to you, the effects of the circumstances and conditions you lived in. Maybe you didn’t think you had much choice. Maybe you felt that the cards were stacked against you, that you were a victim.
Although life can be extremely difficult at times, it is not stacked against us. We are not victims unless we choose to be. We have a choice. We don’t ever have to wake up wondering what happened, because we should be the ones who made it happen. We don’t have to live by default, but by design. We should design and create the life we want. If we take charge, life doesn’t happen to us, it happens through us. We get in the cockpit, we take the controls, we take our lives in the direction we want to go. If you know anything about sailing, no matter where the wind comes from, you can use it to get you to your destination. It may not be ideal, it may not get you there as fast as you had wanted, but it will get you there.
I don’t like the quote at the top of this post. It may sound funny and cool, but I don’t agree with it. I think inside every person, young or old, is a person who wants to be in charge of what happens, who doesn’t want life to happen to them but through them. who wants to be a victor and not a victim, who wants to live by design and not be default. Don’t you?
