How far do you want to go in life? How much do you want to learn? Do you want to keep growing or have you reached a level you are happy with? Do you continue striving to make progress or are you settling down where you are?
There is a certain danger in being satisfied with where we are in life, in reaching a plateau and wanting to remain there. The reason is that life is an uphill journey. Sometimes it is a struggle, at other times it seems a bit easier, but it is overall uphill. So if you stop, if you feel you’ve gone as far as you want to go, if you stop progressing, you’ll eventually start sliding back down. You can’t just continue to stay where you are. There is no such thing as standing still.
What does that mean? It means that if we want to, there is always more to learn, further to go, fresh challenges, new opportunities, and never a dull moment. Being content with what you have, is not the same as being satisfied. Being content is being happy for the progress made so far. Being satisfied is not wanting to do more.
If you’re coasting, you’re either losing momentum or else you’re headed downhill. – Joan Welsh
