I was talking to a company director today. He was quite concerned about how to help his employees feel more ownership for their job. He wants to help them understand what great possibilities each of them can have if they would just care more and have more pride in what they do.
Many companies face the same problem. So many people don’t do their best at work, and sadly they also treat life itself and relationships the same way. To them it’s all like going to a restaurant. They come, sit down, look at the menu and order. They make a few decisions about what they’d like to eat and drink, but for the most part they just accept what is available. Maybe the food isn’t their favorite, but at least they are getting a meal. Maybe life isn’t exactly what they had hoped for, but, they figure, some have it even worse. Maybe it’s not exactly their dream job they are working at, but at least they are able to pay their bills.
While this is all true, they don’t realize how much more they could have, that by taking charge of their lives, by caring more, by putting a little more effort into what they do, they wouldn’t have to go by the menu any more. They wouldn’t have to accept whatever comes their way. They can if they really want to, but they can also choose to start with a blank page and create a whole new menu with anything they want.
Why is this even a problem? Why is it that so many people do the least they can, just enough to get by, but not so little they get in trouble or lose their job? Is it because they are just plain lazy? Is it because they don’t like to work? I don’t think that’s the main reason. It is because they don’t realize it is not the company they are cheating, it is themselves.
It’s your life. Make the most of it. Take ownership of your work, your life and your relationships and create the life of your dreams.
