Are you feeling stuck? Do you sometimes wonder why you can’t seem to get past your present situation? Maybe you have a dream you’ve wanted to reach for years, but it’s still out of reach? Perhaps you’re successful, but you know you are not using your potential to the full. No matter how much you want to move ahead in life, you feel trapped.
Friction always makes it more difficult for one surface so slide past another, or one item to move past another. Whenever we want to move forward in life, there will be some things that try to hold us back. Before we can get rid of or overcome what keeps us from making progress, we have to identify what that is, we have to find out what is causing the friction.
What holds us back is not our good qualities, not the positive traits we have, not our strengths, and believe it or not, it is not even our weaknesses. What holds us back is what we think we can’t do, what we think we are not. Therefore that is the first thing we have to identify. What is it that we think we can’t do? You may be thinking something like: I am not smart enough. I am not the best person for the job. I am not the right kind of man for her. I am not beautiful enough. I am not the leader type. I am not qualified. Nobody in my family has ever been successful.
Let’s say you saw an ad for your dream job, and you are going for a job interview. You may have the best CV in the world, come with the best recommendations, have all the right qualifications, but if you don’t think you are good enough, but the question is, do you believe you can get the job? If you don’t think you are the right one, if you don’t believe that you can really do the job, that will come across in your answers and chances are you won’t get the job.
Once you know what is holding you back, once you have identified your doubts and negative thoughts, you need to replace them with faith and positive beliefs. Make a statement that confirms the new way you want to think.
Here are a few examples of negative and positive ways of thinking.
I hate the way I look
I love and approve of myself
I’m not creative
I always find new ways of thinking about difficult situations
I’ve never been able to get ahead
My past doesn’t have any power over me anymore
Nobody would ever want me as a leader
Leadership comes naturally to me
Keep repeating the positive statements you make to yourself until it starts to feel natural, until it takes root, until you start to identify with the new you.
Then …… Get ready! You are about to move ahead in life.
It isn’t what you are that holds you back; it’s what you think you are not. – John Maxwell
