From the time my brother was just six or seven years old he had an amazing fascination for birds. Even at that young age, he devoured books about birds the way other boys read comic books or memorize football players. His knowledge of birds was, and still is, astounding. Every time I go out with my brother, whether we are in town or in a forest, I am always amazed, not only at his knowledge about birds, but also at the things he will notice that I don’t. “Can you see that? It’s a Common Chaffinch. Look over there, it’s a White-Throated Fantail Flycatcher. Listen, it’s a Great Black-backed Gull.” Even when we are together, walking the same places at the same time, he hears and sees things that I don’t. Often I don’t hear anything at all. Why is that?
It’s the same in life. Life has many opportunities for all of us. But have you noticed that some people seem to always be “lucky” and get the lucky breaks, while others never get the same chances. Sometimes it just doesn’t seem fair. But it really has nothing to do with luck. Was it luck that my brother saw things I didn’t? Of course not. My brother had studied hard for years. He was an expert on the subject. And most importantly, wherever he went, his focus was on birds. That’s what he was looking for.
We see what we are look for. Two ladies could be walking down the street together, one would notice the handsome man with the nice smile on the other side of the street, and the other would only see the new bags in the shop window. Parents are together is a noisy playground. The noise a screaming form the children is deafening. In the midst of the noise and confusion, and mother can easily distinctly hear her own child.
It is the same reason why some people are more positive than negative. If your focus is the negative, the problems and obstacles, don’t be surprised if you find them everywhere. It may even feel like they are looking for you.
If on the other hand you change your focus, and start looking for the positive, for answers and solutions, you will find that you are now one of those seemingly lucky people, always getting new great opportunities.
Work hard, study hard, become an expert if you have to, but most of all, focus on what you want. Don’t expect things to go wrong, don’t look for mistakes. Look for the solutions, opportunities, answers, new ideas, expect the positive, and I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
