In the last analysis, what we are communicates far more eloquently than anything we say or do. – Stephen Covey.
Have you ever heard someone, a friend, a teacher, or a speaker talk about something, and you knew they were not sincere? How did you know? You don’t have to be a rocket scientist or a psychic to know if someone is a fake or a phony. It’s obvious. And it works the same if you are trying to speak or communicate. If you don’t really mean it, you might as well not bother. They’ll know.
That is why we have to become the person we want to be, rather than putting on a show, pretending, or trying to impress. That is why personal development is so vital. If you are the real deal, if you walk the talk, even if you are not so eloquent, people will still understand you loud and clear. Whereas you can be the world champion in public speaking, if you are not speaking from your heart, if you are not sincere, it will be obvious to all.
You see, to be effective, all change has to begin inside us. If we want to change, it won’t do us any good trying to adjust or change the circumstances. If what you do all day is give out facts and figures, or sit at a desk typing on a keyboard, you may be able to survive OK without being a good communicator, for a while, but even that is doubtful. Learning to have effective communication, and to really connect with others is a skill that will always be in great demand. It is something that will help you in every situation you are ever in, unless you are the only person there. Words are such a small part of communication. That’s why you need to make sure that what you are is what you really want to be.
So many people leave what they are, their personal development, up to circumstances, to chance, to their upbringing and education. Don’t. If you want to make the most of your life and your interactions with others, if you want to be a master of effective communication, you have to make personal growth a priority in your life, a lifelong priority, and that process needs to be intentional. You need to make it the foundation on which you need to build the rest of your life. It is never too late. Start today. I promise, you’ll always be happy you did.
