That may not make much sense to you, unless you are Norwegian. Today is the Norwegian Constitution Day, also knows as the National Day of Norway. The Constitution of Norway was signed at Eidsvoll on May 17 in the year 1814, 200 years ago today! The constitution declared Norway to be an independent kingdom. Today it is 200 years since Norway declared it’s independence and started on the road to freedom. That is worth a big celebration!
That day, 17th of May, was a milestone in the history of our country. It marked the beginning of what is today known as The Kingdom of Norway. The difficult work done by the assembled representatives at Eidsvoll manor, about 70 km north of the capitol Oslo, gave Norwegians their own constitution, paving the way for Norway’s independence. That is what we celebrate today.
Most of us have gone through milestone events in our own lives. Each one of us are today the result of choices we have made in the past, the decisions on those milestone events. Looking back we can see certain happenings that changed our lives forever. We can see major decisions we made that set our lives on a different path that eventually led to where we are today. We can see the domino effect of the big choices we have made when certain opportunities presented themselves.
Just like the 17th of May is celebrated by Norwegians all over the world to remember the day we got our independence, we ought to remember and celebrate days or events that changed our lives, as well as the choices and decisions we have made that have made us who we are today. Some of those times in my life were when I decided to start working as a volunteer. Little did I know at the time that my decision would consume my life for the next 39 years. Other major shifts for me was when I got married, when I had my first child, and when, only 4 years ago, I decided to start a new career after working with charities for most of my life. When I look back at my life and the events that have taken me to where I am today, I am so grateful. When I remember the choices and decisions I have made that have brought me to this point in my life, I am thrilled and overjoyed. I feel like celebrating.
Take time to remember the milestones in your life that have led you to where you are today. Reflect on the choices taken that have made you who you are. And then, Celebrate!
